Westpark Skatepark is nearly complete. Skate and celebrate with us at the Grand Opening Celebration Thursday, August 28, 2025 at 4:00 PM!
The City of Ventura is thrilled to announce the opening of the Westpark Skatepark, designed and built by world-renowned Grindline Skateparks, and currently the largest skatepark in Ventura County. The community is invited to skate and celebrate on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. Local dignitaries and project partners will gather to share remarks, followed by the ribbon-cutting ceremony, and an open-skate with the community!
Funded by a $1.9 million grant from the California Statewide Park Development and Community Revitalization Program and an additional $322,000 from Fund 18 – Parks & Recreation Improvements, the project also received significant community support. Local skateboarders contributed $10,000 through fundraising efforts to help expand the 30-year-old skatepark.
“The Westpark Skatepark is a true reflection of what happens when a community comes together with passion and purpose,” said Mayor Dr. Jeannette Sanchez-Palacios. “From local skaters who helped shape the design and raised funds, to the many voices who shared their ideas, this project was built by and for Ventura. We’re thrilled to celebrate this incredible new space that welcomes skaters of all ages and skill levels.”
This project significantly increased the park's size from 3,200 square feet to 20,000 square feet, making it the largest skatepark in Ventura County, and one of the largest in the regions of Los Angeles and Santa Barbara Counties. Additional improvements include enhanced landscaping, public art, and upgraded lighting.
Throughout the planning process, the City held nearly a dozen public meetings to gather input from the community on the desired features and design elements for the park. The City's first-ever design-build contract was awarded to Grindline Skateparks, a Seattle-based firm with over 20 years of experience and a portfolio of over 300 skateparks worldwide.
Design Update - March 2025
All construction projects can have unexpected challenges, especially when excavation reveals hidden obstacles. Historical utility records often provide incomplete or inaccurate information. This was the case when construction crews discovered an unforeseen oil pipeline beneath the originally designed flow bowl section.
The Ventura River Trail/SR 33 corridor is known for containing old, undocumented utilities, and in this instance, the pipeline’s location would have directly conflicted with the planned excavation. Rather than compromising the skatepark’s functionality, Grindline worked diligently to find an alternative solution that preserved the original design intent while minimizing budget impacts.
By incorporating community feedback from previous meetings, Grindline successfully adjusted the design to maximize the available footprint while maintaining the intended experience of the flow bowl.
Construction is progressing steadily, with more than half of the skatepark’s concrete already poured. As we move into spring, the project remains on track for completion in the coming months.
